Travelling With GLP-1 Medication: Ozempic, Mounjaro and Trulicity Storage Rules

Every GLP-1 in Australia shares the same fridge range and the same hard rule against freezing. What they do not share is how long they may sit out of the fridge — the approved figures run from 14 days to 42, and they are not interchangeable.

The numbers, side by side

These are the Australian approved figures. They differ from the US labels in at least one case — Ozempic is 56 days in America and 42 here — so check the number for the country your prescription came from.

Two labels add an instruction the others do not. Ozempic and Saxenda both say to keep the pen away from the cooling element in the fridge — the back wall of a domestic fridge routinely drops below zero even when the display reads 4°C. And Wegovy is the only one that gives you a usable visual check: it should not be used if it does not appear clear and colourless.

Three things are constant across all of them: 2–8°C is the storage condition, 30°C is the ceiling, and freezing is terminal. If you remember nothing else, remember that the out-of-fridge allowance is a budget you spend once — days out do not reset when you put it back.

Why freezing is the strict one

Every one of these labels says do not use product that has been frozen, and none of them offer a judgement call about it. Heat degrades a peptide gradually and probabilistically; ice crystals disrupt the protein structure outright. It is also the failure mode people design themselves into — packing medication in checked luggage, or against a freezer block, or on the cooling element of a fridge. The Ozempic label calls that last one out explicitly: keep it away from the cooling element.

Flights

  1. Hand luggage, always. The hold is not temperature controlled and can go below zero, which is the one unrecoverable outcome.
  2. Bring the pharmacy label or a copy of the script — that is what identifies the medicine as prescribed to you.
  3. Declare medication and its cooling at screening. In Australia both are exempt from the 100 mL liquid rule.
  4. Keep pens capped and vials in their carton, which is the light protection the labels ask for.
  5. For long-haul, plan for the whole door-to-door time, not the flight time. A 14-hour flight is often a 22-hour day.

Cars, summer and the 30°C ceiling

The parked car is the single most common way an Australian cold chain breaks. Interior temperatures climb well past 30°C within minutes on a mild day and keep going, and the boot is worse rather than better. No GLP-1 gives a visible sign it has been cooked — no cloudiness, no colour change — so a pen that spent two hours at 40°C is indistinguishable from one that did not.

This is the argument for being able to measure rather than estimate. A cooler that shows you a live temperature turns an unanswerable question into a reading.

Gel packs versus active cooling

A gel pack has a fixed amount of cold in it. It starts below the range, absorbs heat, and drifts towards ambient — faster the hotter it is around it. On a short trip that is enough. Across a full travel day in summer, the pack is closest to ambient exactly when the day is hottest, and there is nothing to tell you when it crossed the line.
