Travelling With Peptides: Flights, Road Trips and Keeping a Vial in Range

A travel day is the longest a vial will ever spend away from a fridge, and it is the one stretch where nothing about the vial tells you how it is going. Here is how to plan it so the answer is not a guess.

Plan for the door-to-door time, not the flight time

The number that matters is not the four-hour flight, it is the time between the last fridge and the next one. Leaving home at 6am for an evening arrival is a twelve-hour exposure, and the airport and taxi ends of it are often the hottest. Almost everyone under-plans by counting only the leg they have a ticket for.

Never the hold

Cargo holds are not temperature controlled, and on a long flight they get cold enough to freeze. Freezing is the failure that cannot be reasoned about — ice crystal formation disrupts peptide structure directly, and a thawed vial gives no sign of what happened to it. Heat shortens a window; freezing ends it. Everything goes in hand luggage.

Screening in Australia

  • Medication and the cooling it needs are exempt from the 100 mL liquid rule — but declare them at the screening point rather than letting them be discovered.
